Psychological Perspectives on Development

This module will introduce students to human development across the life span. Physical, cognitive, socio-emotional and moral development in childhood and adolescence will be explored. Developmental change will be examined from range of psychological perspectives. Throughout the module knowledge and theory of human development will be applied to the provision of services in the community.

Introduction to Human Development

Introduction to Human Development What is development? Key influences on development including historical, environmental, cultural, family and the media. Social determinants of health and wellbeing. Theoretical Perspectives on Social, Emotional, Cognitive and Physical Development- Biological, Psychodynamic, Behaviourist and Social Learning Theory, Cognitive, Ecological Systems Theory, Community Psychology and Positive Psychology.

Childhood Physical and Cognitive Development

Early childhood is a period of rapid physical growth and significant development in their cognitive abilities. Identify physical and cognitive developmental milestones from infancy through childhood. In this section students will explore perceptual and cognitive development, theories of cognitive development, language development and learning.

Social and Emotional Development

Learners will gain an insight into parent infant interaction. Development of attachment-Separation and deprivation-Implications of attachment theory for provision of services for children and youth. Moral development in children and young people. The development of self and gender identity. Socialisation and the process by which a child learns to interact. Social learning and development of relationships, beliefs and values.

Adolescent Development

Adolescence as a stage of dynamic change. Biological, psychological, social and emotional changes in adolescence. Identity theory and adolescence. Risk behaviours in adolescence.

Adulthood

Learners will explore critical life events in adulthood. Work load and life balance issues. Late adulthood gerontology – ageing, retirement, physical and cognitive changes. Resilience and vulnerabilities at different stages in the lifespan.
