Module Overview

Language, Culture and Identity

This module aims to sensitize and expose students to a wide range of issues concerning the complex relationship between language and society by examining the resources that the linguistic system offers for the construction of social meaning and identity. The focus will be both on a global level where the relationship between language and power becomes evident in a political context, and at a local level where inequalities related to social class and gender are apparent. The changing cultural and linguistic profile of Ireland will also be examined.
