Working with Families

This module on working with families will provide students with an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and best practice techniques in how to work with families in Community Development and Youth Work settings. Learners will examine practice techniques and evidence based programmes. Key issues relating to families along with legislation, policy and structures will be critiqued in line with the values of Community Development and Youth Work Practice.

Family Support

Critically examine family support theory, related theories and family support practice. Include case studies to aid analysis.

Families in need of support

Learners to determine key issues and events that families can experience that may require professional support and intervention,e.g divorce/separation, blended families, bereavement, domestic violence, abuse, incarceration of a family member, etc. Learners to explore the structural causes of inequality, discrimination and disadvantage.

Techniques

Explore various techniques and practices of engaging families and working with various family members in community development and youth work settings.

Family programmes

Students to critique current family based programmes available in a community settings and consider their role in the delivery of such programmes.

Legislation, Policy and Structures

Students to demonstrate a knowledge of current legislation (Children First, Childcare Act 1991, Children Act 2001, etc) policy documents (The Agenda for Children's Services, Better Outcomes Brighter Futures and Working for Children and Families) and structures (Tusla, Department of Children and Youth Affairs, Department of Social Protection, Children's Services Committees, etc.) while considering the implications for practitioners in community development and youth work.
