Screenwriting 1

Build on the knowledge, skills and competencies acquired in Introduction to Media Writing.Enable students to utilize the various tools of scriptwriting in both short and feature length screenplays.Provide an environment in which students can practice and develop the techniques of screenwriting.Facilitate an exchange of ideas between students in addition to developing an ability to critically assess the quality of story ideas and completed scripts.

Tools of Scriptwriting

This section will establish & develop the principles and basic elements of scriptwriting.Pre-writing; generating, filtering & testing ideas. Story & Plot Structure: basic three-act structure. Character: creating & developing character; visual dynamics of character; character motivation; conflict.Language: verbal; visual; writing scene direction; sound.

Preparation and Practice

In this section, students will put into practice the elements of scriptwriting acquired in Section 1. These elements will be applied to the following:(a) Writing short scripts (b) Introduction to & preparation for feature-length scriptwriting: developing an idea; writing the film treatment; character biography; log-lines; plot points
