Research Methods and Practical Skills for Sport Science and Health 3

This module will be based on research methods and practical laboratory experience relating to theory topics this semester. It is intended that this practical module will cover numerous topics from Introduction to Sport and Exercise Biochemistry, Applied Exercise Physiology and Principles of Biomechanics Theoretical modules. A programme of research methods and statistics will form the basis of the practical modules for year 2 and 3 of the program. In all practical's, students will be encouraged to develop their ability to integrate the use of various laboratory techniques in order to solve a prescribed scientific problem. The concept of team-work, good laboratory practice and the need for both validation and statistical evaluation of results will be emphasized throughout. An underlying theme will also be the development of students’ scientific approach and use of statistics to inform research questions and practical problems.Continuous assessment will be carried out through lab reports and practical evaluations throughout the module. It is intended that this form of assessment will test the students’ ability to think laterally in relation to available techniques when solving specific problems.

Introduction to Research Methods and the Scientific Method.- Good and bad practices in social sciences- Asking and defining research questions- The scientific method- Reading, searching and evaluating literature- designing appropriate methodology- Citing and referencing- writing a research report- sharing and publishing results


A programme of laboratory practicals to educate students in the laboratory skills and competencies relating to chosen areas of laboratory based modules will be run concurrently with lectures. Techniques and topics to be addressed will be related to the following modules: Principles of Biochemistry for Sport and Exercise, Applied Exercise Physiology and Clinical Biomechanics.

Methods used to achieve the module learning outcomes will include live tutorials, lectures and demonstrations, laboratory and field based practicals, interpretation of data, case studies, problem-solving exercises, and computer-based learning.
