Key developments in contemporary social care practice have led to a new set of challenges for those now leading and supervising social care services. This has implications for the induction, training, support, continuing professional development and career pathways for social care practitioners. This module aims to equip students with a systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of the challenges in the practice of leadership and professional development. The module will provide new insights, informed by current models of supervision and research at the forefront of professional practice. The module will enable students to gain a critical understanding of knowledge in their area of practice and to practice the skills required to provide effective supervision, professional development, and leadership within a complex and changing social care environment.
Topic 1 Leadership in Social Care Practice and Policy
Understanding leadership philosophy, context and culture. Diagnosing and confronting critical leadership issues. Effective leadership development. Effective leadership practice theories and styles explored and assessment of their application to professional social care settings.
Topic 2 Personal and Professional Staff Development
Critique effective performance management and performance appraisal theories and systems. Professional development planning and goal setting. Effective development of individuals and teams in order to achieve high levels of organisational and individual performance.
Topic 3 Supervision
Models of Supervision in an social care organisational context. Supervision theory and practice.Strategies for managing change and transition. Meaningful ways of strengthening service user and social care professional involvement in service planning and evaluation.Managing difficulties within the supervision process.
