The purpose of this module is to support students to critically examine policy trends, developments and debates within the disability sector. This will be framed within an approach that considers the lived experiences of people with disabilities. Students will be supported to recognise how disability issues are linked to the concepts of inclusion, equality and justice.
Disability, Policy and Legislation: Towards a Rights Based Approach
A range of legislative and policy developments which aim to protect and promote the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities will be examined. Including:- International context – UN and EU-Key legislative & policy developments in areas such as education, employment, service provision, residential support, welfare supports and standards.- Equality legislation and the Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act 2015- Implementation and impact of policy on individuals and disability services - Future policy direction - Voice of people with disabilities in policy development
