This module gives students an introduction to statics and structural mechanics
The aim of this module is enable students:
- To acquire the basic understanding of statics and forces and their effect on an object.
- To determine shear forces and bending moments on a simple beam.
- To demonstrate the relationship of stress, strain and elasticity of a linear elastic material.
- The ability to calculate properties of section and the requirement for their use in engineering design.
To have the ability to produce a design of a simple beam using properties of section and materials
Units
SI system of units
Forces
Properties of a force, components of a force, resolution of coplanar forces, conditions of equilibrium, graphical methods for determining forces, Bow’s Notation, Determination of forces in trusses analytically using the method of resolution of forces at a joint.
