Module Overview

Structural Analysis 2

This module covers basic structural analysis; analysis of simple beams and trusses, and section properties.

The aim of this module is to provide a continuation of the First Year course in Mechanics. After completing this module the student will be able to analyse simple statically-determinate structures.

It also serves as a preparation for module STAD 2051 which focuses on structural design.

  • Revision of 1st Year Mechanics: Newton’s Laws; components of forces, resultant forces, equations of static equilibrium, free-body diagrams;
  • Structural analysis of statically determinate one-span simply supported beams with cantilevers and simple cantilever beams supporting multiple concentrated loads and partial uniformly distributed  loads to find the reactions and to sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams;
  • Analysis of plane trusses – resolution of forces at the joints method, method of sections, free-body diagrams;
  • Properties of member cross- sections – area, centroid, axes of symmetry; first and second moments of area, elastic section modulus, plastic section modulus;
  • Elasticity: simple tension, compression and shear – Hooke’s law, Young’s modulus and shear modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio, complementary shear stress,
  • Stress/strain relationship for steel - plasticity, strain-hardening;
  • Normal stresses in linearly elastic beams – simplifying assumptions, curvature, neutral axis, normal strains, normal stresses, flexure formula;
  • Shear stresses in linearly elastic beams
  • Deflection of linearly elastic beams – parameters affecting deflection;
