The Software Project aims to equip the student with the skills necessary to research, develop andtroubleshoot a basic embedded or software system. The concepts of project planning, managing andreporting are introduced and developed. The student will have responsibility for delivery ofa partially working system which is to be further developed in Software Project 2 . Software Project 1 and Software Project 2 are linked subjects and students work on thesoftware project throughout stage 2.
Practical Elements
Basic software design, development, testing and troubleshooting techniques. Safe operation of any required equipment. Sourcing datasheets and user/development guides.Use of software design tools and integrated development environments. Design, development, testing and troubleshooting of software on a computer and/or embedded system.
Communication Elements
Maintenance of logbook with weekly entries.Research Preparation: Use of library search engines, internet, course notes.Project Planning: Work breakdown structure, tasks, milestones, projectscheduling, Gantt charts. Introduction to Microsoft Project.
Environment, Ethics, Safety
Engineering codes of practice, the assessment of hazards. Operational, healthand safety and environmental issues relevent to the project.
