This module introduces the students to various elements and technologies that make up the Industrial automation environment. It includes components and anatomies of integration as well as integration techniques. The module provides the student with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the importance of selecting appropriate measurement methods, as well as suitable hardware and software, when attempting to integrate a manufacturing process.
Anatomy of Integrated Systems
Classification of production systems, communications and architectures, standards development, investment considerations, future possibilities.
Strategic Value of Systems Integration
A generic view of Integration Engineering, Standard models, Evolutionary process models, process technology – product and process.
Components of Integration
Industrial controllers, IEC61131, Industrial networks, Serial communications, Serial fieldbus and Industrial Ethernet, OPC, SCADA systems, databases, data storage and organization.
Industrial Systems Security
Security of industrial hardware and software within Industry 4.0, risk management and standards.
The material will be presented to the students of the module in the form of
- Lectures of 1 hour duration 3 times a week for 12 weeks
- Laboratories of 2-hour duration every week.
- Mini project: Student will be required to develop and program the solution for a unique problem in groups of two.
