Vehicle Body Technology

This module introduces the learner to vehicle body technology, repair techniques, thermal and non-thermal joining techniques, materials technology and realignment equipment.

Vehicle body construction.

Vehicle body construction types including terminology. Crash test requirements. Principles of structure deformation and impact energy distribution.

Materials.

Steels used in modern vehicle bodies and the effects of repair on the mechanical properties of steel. Component manufacturing including stamping, hydro-forming, laser welding of components. Anti-corrosion coatings.

Realignment equipment.

Computerised and manual measuring /realignment equipment for repairing damaged chassis’s and structures. Fixed bracket benches. Welding and dent removing equipment.

Vehicle refinishing.

Refinishing materials, Paint repair and refinishing techniques. Paint faults. Computerised paint matching and mixing techniques. Types of spray-booths and compressed air systems. Safety requirements for the refinishing environment.

Repair procedures.

Major damage classification and subsequent repair techniques. Repairs using modern dent removal techniques.

Welding.

Welding methods including weld quality guidelines. M.I.G. and resistance weld specifications. Weld testing.

This module will be delivered by means of lectures, practical demonstrations and project assignments.
