Work Placement (Option)

All students are required to spend a formal structured period of approved work placement of approximately 20 weeks duration between the end of semester one of third year and semester one of fourth year or for the period agreed between the student and the placement company prior to the commencement of the placement.  The work placement is worth 30 ECTS credits and represents 50% of third year credits. The objective of the work placement module is to give students an in-depth exposure to a range of learning experiences in an operational business organisation. In this way, the student experiences the challenge of applying academic knowledge to real world situations.  The students would be expected to:-

  • Observe in action business issues that arise in business practice.
  • Demonstrate personal qualities of commitment, flexibility and integrity,
  • Experience teamwork and leadership
  • Be reflective about development of both business competencies and personal capabilities.

Students work in a pre-approved business organisation setting for a period of approximately twenty weeks from February to July inclusive. They will be visited by a University work placement mentor who, in consultation with the work supervisor, evaluates the performance of the student.

Reflective Log

The reflective report should include the following elements:• Name, location and description of business of the Organisation where placement took place• Duration of placement (Start date and finish dates).• How the placement position was obtained• Branch, department, location of placement and changes, if any, during placement• Reporting relationships and changes, if any, during placement• Nature of position and the main duties carried out at each stage of the placement• Nature of workplace experience.• Earnings, hours and times worked during placement• Student’s reflections on how the work on placement may have echoed or reflected lecture material already learned in academic studies.• Student’s view of relationship with fellow employees.• Relationships with Management and Supervision• Visits of Academic Mentor: who, when, where, issues arising or matters raised on visit• Evaluation of the total experience from academic and personal development perspectives.• Evaluation of personal learning outcome from experience• Suggestions for improvements in placement arrangements, structure etc.

Students will take a one hour group orientation meeting per week in semester one, as well as individual meetings with the placement officer.  This will provide an orientation towards placement with activities on CV preparation, career choices etc
