Course Title: Master of Science in Accounting
This course is offered on a full time basis (one year) commencing September. It is designed for honours graduates (2.1 or better) in accounting or equivalent. It is expected that all candidates will have full CAP1 exemptions from Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI).
If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency as detailed on our website. Applicants for this course should have a minimum IELTS (Academic Version) English Proficiency of 6.5 overall (or equivalent) with nothing less than 6 in each component.
The Masters in Accounting offers you the opportunity to develop the knowledge and expertise you need for a rewarding career in accounting and the competences towards future leadership roles on your career pathway. In addition to a Masters level 9 qualification, graduates of this course obtain a jump start towards gaining their professional accountancy qualification with Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI) by providing CAP2 exemptions. You will undertake advanced learning in both theory and professional practice and learn to solve accounting and business problems in innovative ways.
Graduates of the Masters in Accounting benefit from a range of accounting exemptions provided by professional bodies to include; Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA Ireland) and the Irish Tax Institute
This Masters course foundation exposes students to the broad organisational, regulatory and market context in which accountants operate. Students then pursue advanced learning in accounting within the contexts of both professional practice and the theoretical paradigms that underpin such practice.
The majority of graduates will initially transition to a training contract with one of the ‘Big 4’ Accounting firms, KPMG, Deloitte, EY and PWC, or one of the many accountancy practices currently active in the graduate recruitment market. Graduates of this course generally have their choice of roles post completion. Future potential roles range from senior manager with the 'Big 4', or even partner to chief financial officers, financial controllers, company secretaries, financial analysts and planners, tax advisers, financial and management accountants, auditors, system designers, investment advisors and even the formation of their own accounting practice.

This programme is delivered over two extended semesters from September to June. Teaching hours are 21 hours per week in the semester 1 and 19 hours per week in semester 2.

I chose to pursue the MSc in Accounting because I was impressed with the facilities and the delivery of the Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting that I had just completed. The athlete support programme covered my MSc. in Accounting tuition in full and I felt that embarking on the course was preferable to a year juggling work, CAP2 preparation and hurling. In my experience the staff delivering the course were approachable, professional and above all knowledgeable in their respective fields. The materials were sufficient and relevant for future study. One of the key experiences was drafting a report on the origin and future developments of the carbon tax system provided by the Accounting Inquiry module. There were also opportunities to develop public presentation skills in the finance modules. What separates this course from other offerings, is the Accounting & Strategy in Practice module that provides invaluable preparation for the FAEs. The module draws on all strands of the accounting syllabus including audit, finance, management accounting, financial reporting, tax and strategic management exactly like the FAEs. We were assessed through a series of day long case study sessions requiring us to identify the relevant issues and offer possible solutions in the correct format. This module was created to provide students with a foundation for approaching the FAE exams and is a complete success. For this module alone I would recommend this course to anybody interested in pursuing a career in accountancy.
