Dr. Una Beagon is Head of Civil Engineering at the Technological University, Dublin and a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers. 

Una's research in Engineering Education centres around using pedagogical initiatives to improve professional skills in engineering students, shaped by her previous industry experience as a consulting engineer in Ireland and abroad.

Her interests also include phenomenography as a research method, problem-based learning and the first year experience. She is a member of the TU Dublin Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team and has a particular interest in diversity and the experiences of women engineering students. She has won several awards including a Teaching Fellowship, The Engineers Ireland Excellence Award, The SEFI Francesco Maffioli Award, the Le Chéile Gradam and A Teaching Hero Award from the National Forum.  

She is the Principal Investigator on several National and European Research Projects: 

  • In-4- STEM (Innovative Interventions to increase Social and Academic Integration of STEM students)
  • ECO-GT (Engineers Communicating and Collaborating Internationally for the Green Transition)
  • TRAINeng-PDP (Training Engineers for LifeLong Learning through a Personal Development Process)
  • PROFESS 12 (Professional Skills for Engineering Students to achieve SDG 12) 
  • A-STEP 2030 (Attracting Diverse Talent to the Engineering Professions of 2030) 

Una looks after the work placement within the BEng Tech in Civil Engineering and maintains close links with industry through involvement with Engineers Ireland, and is the Chair of The Institution of Structural Engineers in Ireland.
