Alternative Energy Systems

This module covers the full spectrum of alternative energy systems available, their principles of operation, operating characteristics and costs; evaluation of alternative systems, specification for different types of building to comply with all regulatory and planning requirements; the learner will develop an insight into integration of systems into existing and new buildings identify optimum mixes of technology.

To examine the construction, underlying principles, applications and operational characteristics, environmental impact analysis, planning requirements and regulatory requirements for the following alternative energy systems.
1. Solar Thermal
2. Photovoltaic
3. Wind Power
4. Geothermal
5. Wave
6. Biomass
7. Waste incineration
8. Fuel cells

This module will be taught by a series of lectures and assignments that will be formatively assessed. Use will be made of appropriate case studies, class group discussion and problem solving exercises. Learners are expected to undertake significant self-directed learning. E learning and Webcourses resources will be used where possible to enhance programme delivery.
