HTC1 Experiencing Architecture

HTC1 Experiencing Architecture is the foundational introduction to the History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture strand. This module introduces the student to ways of analysing buildings and urban forms, it presents an overview of key themes and ideas in architectural and urban history in lecture-based content, and encourages students to think critically about urbanism and architecture through first-hand experience.

Students are taught basic research skills including; finding sources, reading and writing skills, and the conventions of academic writing, while also learning to draw freehand from observation. Lecture-based content is supplemented by walking tours and building visits in which students gain first-hand experience of a range of building types, urban forms and architectural ideas. The themes and typologies experienced on building visits are supplemented by reading and research activities. Students learn to research, structure and write essays on their experiences of city and building visits.
