Module Overview

Architectural Design Studio IV

“If there are many equally valid technical solutions to a problem the one which offers the user a message of beauty and emotion, that one is Architecture” Luis Barragan quoted by Jat Pritzker Introduction The Pritzker Prize 1980

The aim to develop and refine the architectural skills of measure and judgement, seeking to formulate a holistic response to society’s needs and recognise the impacts of our architectural propositions on the changing world. This studio seeks to expand the repertoire of the learner so that they can deploy constructive judgement at each scale of the evolution of their architectural propositions from the strategic and urban to the haptic realm of architecture.

The focus of the second semester is to deploy the learning from the first semester to propose projects which collectively enhance an existing urban settlement and its environs. The use of a masterplan as a vehicle will set the context for individual student projects. 2nd year architecture uses the lens at the middle scale of artefact to investigate and document place making, building and material consequence.

The middle scale artefact gives the opportunity to test students propositions at appropriate scales; an urban scale [1:2500 & 1:1000], as a site strategy [1:500], a project or building proposition [1:200/1:100], at the haptic scale [1:50 & 1:20] and the physical scale of matter. [1:5/1:1].

The exploration of a given territory will be continued from semester 1 to Semester 2. Masterplanning will be explored to strategically interrogate materiality, tectonics, atmosphere, settlement and public space to understand the history of a selected territory.

The Studio is the primary learning and teaching environment through which individual and group tutorials, reviews, peer learning, collaborative group work, and the iterative production of both process and presentation material takes place.
