Module Overview

Case Studies – Intentions and Realities

Through the analysis of Architectural, Landscape and Urban Case Studies this module aims to reveal the relationship between theory and practice, between the intention and the reality. By examining an Architectural, Landscape or Urban Project in detail the student is exposed to various analytical techniques that can be applied to other works.  The objective in exploring the data is to identify the intentions of the author and expose the realities of its execution.  From inception to post completion the student is made aware of decisions and methods used by designers in their work and also their critical reception.  Key data such as sketches, models, drawings, written material, photographs, biographies, critiques will be used for source material. Various techniques will be used to draw sense from the data and conclusions reached.  From this foundation the student is engaged in a project analysis; gathering the extant data, carrying out a literature review on that data, writing a critique to formulate their own over view of the material.  This along with compositional analysis they complete an essay/dissertation on a selected work over the semester.
