The purpose of the HTC 06 CRITICAL THEORY and PRACTICE is to advance the grounding and understanding of the role of history theory and criticism in the formation of architecture philosophically, so it becomes a means of self-criticism and reflection on each student’s architectural thinking and practice. From this standpoint, the students can begin to forge their own independent ideas or concepts, understand their genesis in a cultural framework and learn to apply an ethical and aesthetic assessment of their use and influence in the field of architecture and beyond.
Each year HTC 06 CRITICAL THEORY + PRACTICE follows the overarching research theme set in Architectural Design Studio (ADS). Through lectures, seminars workshops and projects, the module teaches the student to be critically aware of the issues and debates within architectural theory of the 20th and 21st centuries. The content of the module offers the student an opportunity to expand their architectural knowledge, as well as to learn and adopt specific skills in the comprehension, analysis and interpretation of theoretical texts and built work and apply this thinking directly to design projects in this module or studio.
