Module Overview

Architectural Design Studio IX

Architectural Design Studio IX assists students in developing and testing topics and positions for their eventual thesis projects through initial research. Topics may be organised around a year-based theme and focuses on relevant and sustainable contemporary positions in architectural discourse relating to interconnected cultural, social, environmental and economic issues as well as technological advancement in constructing and inhabiting the built environment. In addition, the module may be focused through a further lens such as a common location or architectural typology.

The learner is expected, as an individual and /or within a group, to analyse and critically re-interpret these themes, ideas and locations in order to adopt an initial, individual research and design position, which will be more fully explored in Architectural Design Studio X. The learner is asked to come to a position that reflects serious and meaningful engagement with the responsible and resilient practice of architecture, and the challenges this currently faces in the world. The ADS IX module is organised around a series of projects/stages that offer a sequential design research framework for the initial development of the individual student’s architectural thesis proposal.

The studio is focused on an idea, agenda and/or place. A number of project stages facilitate the emergence of an architectural research position, through individual and group tutorials, workshops and periodic reviews, leading to the establishment of an initial, individual architectural thesis proposition. The research, analysis and initial design propositions will be progressed through drawing, diagram, model and other relevant graphcial and written media.

The Studio is the primary learning and teaching environment through which individual and group tutorials, reviews, peer learning, collaborative group work, and the iterative production of both process and presentation material takes place. Studio teaching and learning involves:

  • Engagement with lecturers in studio environment
  • Engagement with fellow learners in studio environment
