Module Overview

Architectural Design Studio 10

This design studio module allows the learner to combine the conceptual and practical design skills necessary to comprehensively develop a well-synthesised architectural thesis project.

In this module, the learner develops a relevant thesis topic of interest by proposing, carrying out and representing a comprehensive architectural design project. The topic and project are based on preliminary investigations carried out initially in the Architectural Design Studio IX and Thesis Development modules, and further developed in this module. The thesis design project is guided by the development of a clear conceptual strategy arising out of project research combined with an informed attitude to context (physical site context and other relevant contexts), programme, structure, services, materials and occupation. Expert input through workshops and lectures forms part of this module’s learning, informing students’ thesis projects and design processes as they develop.

The module requires the learner to clearly frame the project within the principles of sustainability and resilience as they apply conceptually and materially to the architectural idea, its design, programme and site. The project also requires the learner to develop an appropriate method of working (methodology) for their individual design project.

Students participate in a studio guided by a theme or agenda which they interpret through their individual projects. Students pursue their individual architectural thesis design projects under tutorial guidance. The project is developed through design stages across the semester (from intial proposal, through developed design to final presentation) across a range of scales and through a range of appropriate media. The development of the thesis project is supprted by tutorials in building structures, building sustainability and the critical discourse relevant for their work.

The Studio is the primary learning and teaching environment through which individual and group tutorials, reviews, peer learning, collaborative group work, and the iterative production of both process and presentation material takes place. The Studio employs the following teaching and learning methods:

Tutorials (one-to-one and group)

Self directed learning

Peer Group Presentation (Crit/Review)

Feed-back sessions

Studio based learning

Design workshops on specialist themes or skills
