This module will expand the knowledge of the student in the analytical qualitative and quantitative analysis of biological samples. Emphasis will be placed on developing the capacity of the students to understand and discuss the current and emerging methodologies in the study of biomolecules, cells and tissues. The material covered in the lectures is reinforced in the laboratory practicals.
- Purification of a protein such as IgG or haemoglobin using a chromatography technique such as ion-exchange or gel filtration
- Analysis of the protein using protein quantification assays such as Bradford, protein activity and SDS-PAGE
- Preparation and analysis of both cell and tissue samples
- Immunohistochemistry analysis of tissue samples
Protein extraction
Cell and Tissues extraction methods
Protein purification
the principle and applications of a variety of protein purification chromatographic techniques and technology such as FPLC, affinity chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography, gel permeation chromatography, Hydrophobic Interaction chromatography.
Analytical techniques
Analytical techniques including SDS-PAGE, isoelectric focusing, 2-D electrophoresis , fluorescence spectrophotometry and microscopy, the principle and applications of immunological methods such as immunoassays and immunohistochemistry, HPLC and mass spectrometry, the principle and methodologies of preservation of cells and tissues, proteomic techniques such as microarrays, lectin analysis
Students will learn through lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals
