Module Overview

Advanced Biomedical Literacy

The aim of this module is to enhance the ability of practising medical scientists to engage with the primary academic literature in biomedical science and to stay informed of the key developments in their cognate disciplines. It will foster the development of advanced skills in scientific literacy, critical thinking and data interpretation. A secondary aim is to place the learner at the centre of a process of academic and scientific dialogue via a ‘journal club’ that the students will have to organise and manage at their place of work or study. The module is entirely delivered by distance and E-learning methods.

The module content will be driven by the students and will closely align with a cornerstone discipline in Biomedical Science, e.g. Cellular Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Immunology, Haematology, Medical Microbiology and Transfusion Science. Given that all material will be drawn from the primary literature it will be consistently at a very high level and at the cutting edge of each discipline. The academic tutors will work with the students to ensure that all content is appropriate and at a suitable level for a postgraduate module. Students will also be guided through critical appraisal and question formulation techniques.

This module will be entirely delivered via distance and E-learning methods. The learner will be required to develop, manage and chair an in-house ‘journal club’ at their workplace, where the academic literature will be discussed and debated as per standard academic practice in Clinical practice. The learner will be required to present four such papers and also to schedule and organise the presentation of at least four additional presentations by other speakers. Students will maintain a log-book/journal of their activities in this regard which will be available to the academic staff. An academic representative will be present at one of each of these two types of sessions for grading purposes. Students will have to demonstrate their skills in rapidly assimilating new information via presentation of an unseen paper at the end of the module.
