Building Services 2

This module follows on from the building services module in year 2. There is greater emphasis on design calculations and selection of suitable systems for different applications. This module aims to provide the student with a design capability for mechanical services in commercial and industrial applications

  • Building solar heat gains, solar geometry, solar temperature, thermal response of buildings, decrement factor, surface factor.
  • Thermodynamic properties of fluids and gasses. Relationship between temperature, mass and volume, 1st Law of thermodynamics, energy balance, Vapour tables, specific enthalpy. Heat transfer calculations.
  • The properties of humid air, use of psychrometric tables to carry out design calculations, dew point, relative humidity, moisture content, sensible heating and cooling, humidification and dehumidification.
  • Heat gain calculations using solar, casual, equipment and process.
  • Estimation of heating and cooling plant sizes.
  • Selection criteria for air-conditioning systems, system components.
  • All air A.C. systems. CAV, VAV, split refrigeration, centralised.
  • Air water A.C. systems, Fan-coil units, induction units.
  • Design of duct systems, constant pressure drop & velocity method, selection of air terminal units and diffusers.
  • Water distribution systems: Pipe sizing, pump selection primary and secondary pumps, valve selection, throttling, isolation, regulating, diverting and mixing valves. Valve characteristics, authority. Control systems
  • Refrigeration systems, compression cycle, components and calculations, COP, reverse cycle heat pump. Absorption systems, applications.
  • Boiler installations, construction, fuels, efficiencies, and control

The module will be delivered by means of lectures and laboratory classes. The module will be assessed by written examination and continuous assessment.
