Indicative Syllabus

In Part II of the IT Project students continue working in their groups to implement the business software system for which they have completed the analysis and design in the IT Project Part I module.

Supervision

Each project team is as assigned a supervisor. Teams will conduct weekly meetings with the supervisor to report on progress. Meetings will take the form of a typical weekly project review meeting which might occur in a professional environment where an IT project is being developed. Teams will complete weekly timesheets and send them to supervisor.

Project Management Methodology

As part of the rollout of their project, teams will use Problem Based Learning techniques to develop knowledge and skills in the area of project management methodologies. The Agile project management methodology will be incorporated into the module. Teams will be required to use Agile project management techniques to manage the development and test phases of the project.

Initial Phase

In the initial weeks students will refine their project plan for the semester and give final consideration to the functional requirements outlined in IT Project Part I. A final set of core and 'nice to have' requirements will be agreed with the supervisor.

Project Implementation

Teams take full ownership for the project planning in relation to development of the system. Tasks will assigned among the group using the the project management and teamwork skills developed previously as part of the Business and IT program. Teams are responsible to report to the superviser where slippage from the project plan occurs, and adjust project plans accordingly.Where there is slippage or delays to tasks which are in the critical path of the project plan teams may decide to work overtime or make some adjustment to the deliverables in agreement with the supervisor. Teams will use appropriate Agile-based project management software to manage, report on, and coordinate the project. In the context of the use of an Agile project management methodology, the supervisor will take on the role of Program Manager in overseeing the projects.

Deliverable 1 - Completed software application

The main deliverable from this module is a completed, working, fully tested, software system.

Deliverable 2 - Presentation and Demonstration

Students are required to complete a final presentation and demonstration of their final software application. This demonstration will take the form of a typical, software demonstration which might occur in a professional sales context. Students will be expected to answer in depth questions in relation to:
- the functionality of the system
- the business benefits of the system
- costs to develop the system
- challenges encountered in developing the system
- project management of the development of the system

Deliverable 3 - Documenation

Documentation will include:
- all documentation completed as part of IT Project Part 1
- All project management documentation generated as part of the development of the system
- A set of test plans for the system including functional and unit testing
- Manuals for the system for each of the different user roles

The documentation will be presented as a single bound document with a single table of contents. Given the broad range of documentation and areas covered by the modules IT Project Part 1 and IT Project Part 2 it is expected that this will be a very substantial document. IT is expected that this deliverable will present detailed documentary evidence of the students learning and will be a useful to prospective employers in gaining an understanding of the students abilities.
