Small Business Management & Entrepreneurship

The Purpose of this module is to encourage an understanding of entrepreneurial behaviour at both micro and macro levels. It aims to bring students to a leval of business knowledge which would enable them to address in a hands on way the key issues of business start up, growth and long term survival. It will enable students to identify and evaluate new business opportunities and respond appropriately.

Section One

Introduction: Definition of the entrepreneur, the importance of the small business sector in Ireland, Obstacles to enterprise development, industrial policy past and present in the sector, the environment facing the small enterprise.

Section Two

The nature of the Entrepreneur: Profile of the entrepreneur, motives, personality traits, qualities and characteristics, types of entrepreneur, the tasks of the entrepreneur.

Section Three

The 'Idea' and planning stage: Souces of new ideas, looking for competitive advantage, market research, marketing planning, feasibility studies, drafting a business plan, choosing the legal form of a business and registration of the buisness,

Section Four

Gathering resources and Support for the Business: Sources of finance, state agencies and support structures, networking and the entrepreneur.

Section Five

Development of the enterprise: strategies for growth, managing cashflow during the growth phase of the business, the changing role of the entrepreneur as the business grows and managing a business for growth.
