Module Overview

Work Based Project 1

This module is designed for students who work in the civil engineering industry while taking this part-time programme. In this module, students combine and build on prior knowledge and materials from the taught modules on the programme to date.

The module will integrate students’ work-based experience with the taught material on the programme through delivery of an individual study of an industry project to develop the students’ written and verbal communication skills. The students will also conduct relevant research of academic literature related to subjects raised in their specific project to enhance self-learning.

Students choose a civil or structural engineering project from their industry experience to produce a technical report that presents the project background with the design and/or construction stage. For students not employed in the industry, a recently completed iconic civil or structural engineering project can be chosen to form the basis of their research and report.

Individual research to enhance self-learning skills culminate in a fully referenced draft and final technical project report. At least one interesting topic of the project shall be researched using academic journals and papers with findings included in the project report.

Key engineering topics are expected to be covered, some of which may include:

  • Key Project Milestones; Form of Contract; Contract Price.
  • Health and Safety; Sustainability, BC(A)R.
  • Key surveys – site investigation, contamination, opening-up works, etc.
  • Key civil and structural engineering design and construction details discussed and developed with drawings, photos, etc.
  • Any interesting details, planning restrictions, unforeseen issues, etc.

Project reports are typically 3,000 to 3,500 words long.
