Module Overview

Criminal Law

This module provides students with an in-depth knowledge of Irish Criminal Law, and the various implications of committing a criminal act. Students will learn how to identify, and hypothetically prosecute or defend a crime, and to understand the theoretical and practical implications of viewing crime from variety of perspectives.  Furthermore, this module informs students of the role played by the executive, legislative and judicial branches in dealing with crime.

This module will comprise a series of lectures, held over two semesters, combined with independent learning requirements.

Students will be required to carry out independent research on legal topics and make class presentations on elements of the module. In-class problem solving exercises will be incorporated into the lecture schedule. Individual and group feedback will be provided.

Tutorials are provided for which students will work individually and in groups to solve novel legal problems by identifying, applying and reflecting upon relevant legal rules. Formative feedback will be provided at tutorials.
