Working with Data

The module focuses on developing the key data-specific skills necessary for the successful development and implementation of an analytic project.  The module covers the key skills needed to manage, create, process and extract data located in an organisation’s database using data processing-oriented languages and SQL programming.  The module also develops skills in general data wrangling including data cleansing, pre-processing, conversion, parsing and data fusion and integration - tasks required to handle data from a variety of sources.

Module content will be broadly as follows:
‒ Processing data from different data sources and different data formats
‒ Using various data structures in data centric scripting languages
‒ Performing descriptive analytics
‒ Creating basic graphic representations of data
‒ Merging, sampling, enriching, etc. data to create new data or data subsets
‒ Creating and using a functional pipeline for re-usable data processing
‒ Web scraping
‒ Working with time series and text data
‒ Processing digital signal, image, and spatial data
‒ Overview of SQL and the role of SQL databases
‒ SQL DML functions for basic data operations
‒ Using scripting languages to connect to and access a database
‒ Examining the different methods of and issues with extracting data from databases

The module is designed to be delivered within a blended learning model, employing mixed modes (online and face to face) of learning, teaching and assessment.

TU059 will be delivered primarily in a face-to-face mode while TU256 and TU060 will be delivered in a blended mode.

The module is composed of lectures, tutorials and computer laboratory sessions
