Module Overview

Electrical Services Engineering Project

This module provides students with the skills required to design electrical and protection systems within buildings effectively and enables students to solve problems, and research independently, and prepares them for the work which they will be likely to undertake in industry. The module will give the student an opportunity to focus on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on affordable and clean energy and climate action. This module integrates the collective learning from all  previous applied modules.

Students will be asked to select a building for their project at the start of the module. They will develop this building into a 3D model and design the electrical services for the building. As part of the project, students will work as part of a team to develop a sustainable component to their project with a focus on affordable and clean energy and climate action.

At the end of the module, students will be asked to submit a structured, clear and cohesive project document. This document structure is proposed but not limited to the following configuration.

  • Section A – Specification and drawings
  • Section B – Design methodology for the electrical services in the building under consideration
  • Section C – Team element - Sustainability component related to the selected building

The specific topics related to the (electrical Services engineering) project

In general the specific topics related to project will include the following:• Safety• Earthing• Electrical supply Interfacing• General Services• Lighting/ Lighting control/Daylighting/Glare• Fire Alarms• Emergency Lighting• Electrical containment• Electrical Distribution• Renewable Interfacing• Sustainability• Costings/Appraisals• Suitable written specifications and design justifications for the above can be in various forms - Drawings Plans / written text / schedules and spreadsheets / calculations/simulations etc.Emphasis in this project will be on the inter relationships between these services so that the student can obtain the perspective of a holistic electrical design.
