Electrical Engineering 1

This module will introduce and develop the student’s understanding of the theory of alternating current and voltage. AC and DC machines will be introduced. The effect of circuit components on the relationship between voltage and current will be covered including their effect on both single phase and 3 phase AC power and DC power.

Introduction to alternating voltage and current.

Introduction to principles of Electric fields, magnetic fields and the electromagnetic spectrum. Applications of electro-magnetism in the operation of motors, generators and transformers. Introduction to alternating voltage and current. Development of variables such as amplitude, frequency etc. Introduction to AC generation. Relationship between generation and variables such as frequency and peak voltage.Relationship between maximum voltage and RMS voltage.

Theory of AC on electrical components.

Effect of Resistance, Capacitance and Inductance on AC waveforms. Concept of Leading and Lagging with respect to voltage and current in AC circuits. Power factor and phase relationship.

Introduction to AC machines.

3 main types of AC motor. Torque speed characteristics. Slip speed. Introduction to DC machines. Theory for series and shunt wound motors. Torque speed characteristics.

Concept of representing AC waveforms as phasors.

Drawing of phasor diagrams and voltage V time curves. Addition of different AC waveforms. Calculation of addition both graphically and mathematically.
