Electrical Services Design 3

This module builds upon the knowledge gained from Electrical Services Theory Modules 1 and 2. The student will learn to apply practical methods of Lighting and Electrical Services design.

The aim of the module is to provide the student with the knowledge needed for carrying out the main aspects of the design of Interior Lighting and Electrical Services for basic industrial and commercial premises.

  • Data communications cabling overview: Structured cabling systems, international standards, cable types, fibre and copper cables. Cable installation: installation techniques, fixings. Equipment types, space and power requirements; Testing structured cabling systems.
  • Design of emergency lighting systems for buildings.
  • Design of fire alarm systems for buildings.
  • Design of lighting for factories, offices, supermarkets, etc.
  • Electrical Services Design: Design of cable management systems; cable sizing; overcurrent protection. Distribution design, metering and instrumentation; co-ordination of system protection; Implications of high fault levels.
  • Interior Lighting Design: Point to point and lumen methods of calculation; comparison of various types of scheme; consideration of quality aspects in design; controls and energy costs.
  • Introduction to standby power systems; UPS and EMI protection.
  • Testing and commissioning of electrical installations.

This module will be delivered by means of lectures/laboratories, where use will be made of electrical services design software
