Electrical Services Design Module 4

By the end of this module students will be proficient carrying out the main aspects of the design of Electrical Services for various industrial and commercial premises. They will develop their own design style and methods. They will initiate design procedures. They will provide a professional presentation of design information neatly documented.

  • Familiarisation with CIBSE codes and guides. Daylight calculations for various points in an installation from windows and skylights. Integration of natural and artificial lighting design. Advanced lighting design for quality interiors. Develop control strategies to minimise energy use whilst maintaining user satisfaction, quality aspects in design. Calculation of energy savings and pay back. Review of up to date research in this area.
  • Further development of the design of electrical services for buildings including: structured cabling, general services, supplies to machines and other equipment in industrial and commercial installations.
  • Cable sizing and adiabatic calculations, final operating temperatures of cables in normal operating and various fault conditions..

    • Design of standby power supplies, load shedding, distribution design, parallel operation, ESB requirements and ETCI rules. Hospital and other installations.

This module will be taught by lectures. Material covered in lectures will be applied to various design packages in the computer design laboratory. The lecturer will increasingly becoming a facilitator placing greater responsibility on the student to learn beyond the information given.
