This module aims to provide the student with an overview of the history, institutions and policies of the European Union as they affect Irish business and society.

The EU: Origin & Development: - Students will develop an understanding of the EU, its origins & development, along with the key EU treaties and EU enlargement.

Member States: - Students will develop an awareness of various EU member states - their political, economic, cultural and social conditions - and how they function within the EU

Institutions: - Students will gain an understanding of the key EU institutions, their roles and responsibilities, as well as how the relate to one another within the context of EU governance.

Political Context: - Students will become familiar with the current political context of Europe, including European Enlargement and Membership Criteria, as well as the development of a European identity in the wake of political events in the member states (Brexit, etc...)

 

The European Union: Origin and Development

Students will develop an understanding of the European Union, its origin and development, along with the key EU Treaties.

The Member States of the European Union

Students will gain an awareness of various Member States of the EU, their political, economic, social and cultural specificities and the manner in which they interact with the overall organization.

The Institutions of the European Union

Students will gain an understanding of the main institutions of the European Union: the European Parliament, The European Commission, the Council of the European Union and the European Council: their roles and responsibilities as well as the manner in which they relate to one another within the context of EU governance

The Political Context

Students will become familiar with the current political context of Europe, including European Enlargement and Membership Criteria, as well as the development of a European identity in the wake of political events in the Member States (Brexit, etc.)

This module is primarily taught by lecture and discussion. In addition, students are encouraged to take online quizzes during class time to test their knowledge. Students are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with current social, cultural and political developments in relation to EU member states - with a particular focus on how membership of the EU impacts them as EU citizens. Students' critical thinking and writing skills will be developed through discussion, spoken and written assignments. Students are encouraged to engage with a wide range of media as part of their learning methodology, particularly political/cultural podcasts and websites.
