This subject introduces the student to specialist engineering sevices in buildings. It encompasses the design, installation and regulatory requirements of systems encountered in  specialist facilities common to the healthcare, pharmaceutical & micro-electronic industries.

Covers the design, installation & regulatory requirements of common specialist  facility engineering systems encountered in healthcare, pharmaceutical & micro-electronic buildings.

 

Topics covered include:

 

Ultra High Purity Water: UHPW grades & regulatory standards, feed water analysis, pre-treatment technologies, reverse osmosis, de-ionisation, distillation, system design criteria, system layouts, design calculations, pipework materials & fittings.

 

Compressed Air Technology: Compressed air fundamentals, types of compressed air, assessment of system flow and pressure requirements, system components and technologies, system sizing, economic appraisal of equipment alternatives, heat recovery, pipe work materials & fittings.

 

Swimming Pool Water Treatment: Bathing Loads, turnover periods, pool circulation systems, filtration, balance tank sizing, pool water heating, makeup water requirements, disinfection by chlorination, disinfection by brominating agents, two-part disinfection, pool water chemistry, Langelier saturation index, water balance.

 

Piped Medical & Industrial Gases: Production of gases, BCGA code of practice, HTM, NFPA standards & requirements, medical, industrial & laboratory gases, high pressure manifold & bulk liquid storage distribution systems, safety design considerations, plant room space requirements, Monitoring and alarm systems, storage capacity requirements, pipe sizing, Testing and commissioning.

 

Steam Plant Design: Steam generation, steam boilers, feed tanks, boiler feed pumps, steam consumption rates, water treatment of boiler feed water, heat recovery systems, layout and design steam pipe work systems, ancillary equipment, velocity & pressure drop methods of steam pipe sizing, condensate flow requirements and pipe sizing, pipe work materials and fittings

 

Principles & Design of Pharmaceutical Production facilities: User requirement specifications, Operational flows and site inter-relationships, design brief, front end studies, room equipment data sheets, environmental conditions, clean room classifications & GMP requirements, design development, principles and design of oral liquid, Semi - solids, topical, sterile products, Laboratories and containment facilities.

Instruction, discussion, problem-solving exercises (including class group participation) and in course assessment. The students will be expected to undertake independent study.
