Standards and Concepts in Quality

National Quality Standards relevant to decontamination of instruments used in primary care quality systems such as ISO will be explained

Decontamination cycles for instruments used in primary care.

An overview of the entire process of manual cleaning, automated cleaning, inspection, thermal disinfection, packaging and sterilization followed by storage and transport of instruments used in primary care will be explained

Principles and practice of instrument decontamination

Detailed descriptions of the manual and automated washing and disinfection processes for lumen and non lumen instruments will be explained and the appropriate parametric data record retention's will be emphasized

Moist heat sterilization of reusable instruments used in primary care.

The principles and practice of autoclave loading, sterilization and the monitoring of the performance of the autoclave will be presented. The management of parametric records will be discussed and remedial actions needed in the case of non conf romances arising will be explained

Good Aseptic Practices in primary care.

The use of appropriate segregation to prevent cross contamination between clean and dirty instruments will be outlined. The effective use of barrier packing and clothing will be explained. Good hand hygiene and effective application of gloves will be illustrated.

The validation and routine testing of decontamination processes

The validation of washers, disinfectors, autoclaves and water supplies will be described. Sampling methods and test procedures will be illustrated for verification of washer disinfector, autoclave and waters treatment systems. Units of measurement will be outlined for bioburden, pH, conductivity, hardness and other indicative measurements

Water Purification Systems-used in primary care.

The production, storage and maintenance of purified water for use in washer disinfectors, autoclaves used in primary care practices. The principles of reverse osmosis water purification and aseptic storage of water and the prevention of biofilm formation will be discussed. Water sampling and quality parameter measurement will be described e.g. conductivity

Workplace safety and waste management in primary care.

Appropriate PPE and safe work practices will be described. Safety symbols and color coded waste segregation will be illustrated.Incidence and accident reporting documentation will be explained and emergency response for chemical spillage and accidental injury will be discussed
