Technology Management

Description: The module will explore a variety of approaches and strategies for effective management of technology. It articulates innovation as a wide-ranging phenomenon relevant to managers at all levels in very different types of organisations, irrespective of size and sector.

Central to the module are the tools and techniques that help organisations source, implement and exploit innovation and technology management in an effective way. The activities contained within the module are designed to impart processes and ideas for use in the work environment.

Aims: The aim of this module is to develop participants’ ability to analyse, adapt and apply theories and models associated with the management of technology for competitive advantage. Tools provide a framework for selection and planning of initiatives to invest in, structuring the organisation’s resources to maximise return on investment, whether directly or indirectly.

Introduction to technology management. Key concepts and interrelations. The role of innovation: Drivers, characteristics, strategic alignment. Innovation Process. Innovation and economics: Economic measures and mediators, innovation systems. The innovation value chain. Innovation/technology audits. The innovation funnel.

Phase 2

Tools and techniques.New product development, new service development routines. Contrasting services with products: Importance of Services. Protecting Ideas, intellectual property. Business model innovation. Lead user innovation. Open innovation. Customer driven innovation.

Phase 3

Organising for Technology. Team structure and Organization Operational innovation. Technology strategy. Technology adoption lifecycle. Technology S Curves. Road mapping and portfolio planning.

Phase 4

Low, Medium and High Technology. Modularity. Platforms and Standards. Emerging technologies. Disruptive innovation. IntellectualProperty. Timing of entry.

Lectures are supplemented by structured classroom discussions and a series of group-based exercises

Interactive exercises serve to reinforce learning allowing participants to apply learning in case-based contexts. As the module deals with a range of complex management activities, literature and case methods will be important to applying concepts in a practical context.

Outside class contact time the students will access material or post contributions to the course’s intranet website.
