Traditional Irish Culture & Society

The purpose of this module is to explain to the student the main characteristics of traditional Irish culture and society at the time of the foundation of the State and its evolution until the late 1960s. It will enable the student to draw on supporting data and statistics, primary and secondary sources to trace the changes that occurred in Irish culture and society during the course of the first fifty years of independence. The module also aims to have the student reflect on and discuss the thematic elements that characterise traditional Irish society. Finally the module will have the student compare and contrast, both orally and in writing, the principal characteristics of traditional Irish culture and society with his/her own culture and society.

Indicative Syllabus:

A selection of the following themes will be covered with a focus on the foundation of the Free State to the late 1960s. A wide range of sources will be used including literary texts, films, artistic works, media extracts and songs to illustrate examples and stimulate discussion and reflection. Focus will be placed on developing students’ ability to discuss various issues, both orally and in writing.• A brief introduction to the foundation of the State and government in Ireland• An overview of life in Ireland in the twenties : population, occupations, family• The Irish language• The role of the Church• The education system• Economic issues• Migration• Gender Issues• Media
