Description of Year Abroad

- Students will travel to Europe for two semesters in level three of the programme. With subsequent vacation time, this still allows the student up to 15 months in a European country before returning to complete their studies at home. - The course of study taken by students while abroad will obviously differ depending on the destination of the student and the modules on offer at the time. However, all students will have to complete a learning agreement prior to travelling abroad, and will have to get any changes to this approved by academic staff in IT Blanchardstown. It is by this mechanism that the modules and levels of study taken by students while abroad will be controlled. As part of the discussions between the student and the academic adviser, the subject match and level of study will be considered in detail. The aim of the learning agreement is to ensure that the student will return with 50 ECTS credits. The institute will award the remaining 10 credits to the student based on the completion of a learning log and an assessment when the student returns to IT Blanchardstown. Any ancillary project work will be agreed initially in the learning agreement or may be communicated to the student by their supervisor when and if deemed necessary.- Students who choose not to take the Year abroad option will be required to take as mandatory the first four modules from the Course Schedules for Semester 5 and 6 respectively. Students shall then take 2 modules from the remaining 4 modules on the Course Schedule (excluding Semester Abroad 1 and 2) for each semester.- The detail of the learning outcomes of Semester Abroad 1 and 2 will be determined in the learning agreement approved in advance of travel to the Institute, and will include study of modules of equivalent credits and equivalent levels in the European host Institute. A minimum of 10 credits are to be taken in the foreign language at the partner institution. The agreed learning outcomes will complement those listed above.- The final 10 credits will be awarded on return to IT Blanchardstown, and will involve testing competencies in language in particular. The students will be made aware that if they fail to achieve the required number of credits in this study period abroad, that they will likely have to repeat a module on return. In the case of a serious failure, the full year may need to be repeated in IT Blanchardstown.
