Module Overview

French Language, Culture and Society 4a

The purpose of the module is to give students an overview of the main issues in twentieth centuryFrance. The module will identify key issuesthrough the study of a piece of literature, films and the media. The module also aims to develop students’ reading and writing skills, with particular emphasis on structure and vocabulary. Finally, it will give studentsopportunities to practice and develop their oral skills through interaction with text and media.

Culture and Society: Historical overview of France from 1940

Periods such as France under German Occupation, the Post-war as well as the Fifth Republic could be covered. Selected topics such asthe consequences of WW2, post-war social reforms, the decolonisation process, the Fifth Republic, May 1968 ‘events’ and the ‘MitterrandYears’ could be analysed. Examples of relevant supporting literature, film and documentaries will be studied

The development of Reading and Writing skills/Project Work

Through the study of thematic issues under culture and society, students will have an opportunity to develop their reading skills in French.There will also be specific work carried out to develop the students writing ability in French. Students will focus on writing summariesand presenting information and arguments in French.

The development of Listening and Speaking skills

Through the study of thematic issues under culture and society, there will be specific study of audio and video materials with a view todeveloping the students’ comprehension skills and their ability to express their opinions in the target language.
