German Language, Culture and Society 4a

The purpose of the module is to give students an in-depth understanding of the foundations of contemporary Germany through the study of events surrounding German reunification. The module will identify key issues through the study of a piece of literature, films and the media. The module also aims to develop students’ reading and writing skills, with particular emphasis on structure and vocabulary. Finally, it will give studentsopportunities to practice and develop their oral skills through interaction with text and media.

German reunification

This topic will involve a comparative study of the two Germanies during the 1980s from a political, economic and social perspective. The sequence of events leading to the collapse of the GDR will be examined in detail, as will the period between the fall of the wall and the reunification of Germany in October 1990, and the subsequent integration of the two parts of Germany. Films, a piece of literature and other texts relating to the period will be studied.

The development of Reading and Writing skills / Project Work

Through the study of thematic issues under culture and society, students will have an opportunity to develop their reading skills in German. There will also be specific work carried out to develop the students' writing ability in German. Students will focus on writing summaries and presenting information and arguments in German.

The development of Listening and Speaking skills

Parallel to work on thematic issues under culture and society, there will be specific study of audio and video materials with a view to developing the students’ comprehension skills and their ability to express their opinions in the target language.
