Spanish Language, Culture and Society 4a

The purpose of the module is to give students an understanding of Spain after 1975 through the study of Spanish political, social and economic events. The module will identify relevant issues through the study of music, films and media. The module also aims to develop students’ reading and writing skills, with particular emphasis on structure and vocabulary. Finally, it will give students opportunities to practice and develop their oral skills through interaction with text and media.

Culture and Society: The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) & Franco Spain

This topic will include an overview of the key events which shaped the periods of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco era. Examples of literature, films and media from these periods of Spanish history will be studied in order to highlight key issues.

The development of Reading and Writing skills / Project Work

Through the study of thematic issues under culture and society, students will have an opportunity to develop their reading skills in Spanish.There will also be specific work carried out to develop the students' writing ability in Spanish. Students will focus on writing summaries and presenting information and arguments in Spanish.

The development of Listening and Speaking skills

Parallel to work on thematic issues under culture and society, there will be specific study of audio and video materials with a view to developing the students’ comprehension skills and their ability to express their opinions in the target language.
