French Language, Culture and Society 4b

The purpose of this module is to give students an in-depth understanding of thematic issues in contemporary France through the study of recent trends in film, literature, music, the media and other aesthetic forms.Themodule also aims to further develop the students’ reading and writing skills with particular emphasis onstructure and vocabulary. Finally, it will give the students opportunities to practice and further develop theiroral skills through interaction with text and media.

Culture and Society: Contemporary France

This topic will include an analysis of the changing face of France in the twentieth-first century. Issues such as the French language andidentity, linguistic and cultural diversity in France, gender roles in contemporary French society, the evolution of the family and same sexmarriage, the role of religion immigration and social issues right up to the present day will be examined. Examples of contemporaryliterature, film and media will be studied in order to highlight key issues.

The development of Reading and Writing skills / Project Work

Through the study of thematic issues under culture and society, students will have an opportunity to further develop their reading skills inFrench. There will also be specific work carried out to develop the students writing ability in French. Students will focus on writingsummaries and presenting information and arguments more accurately in French.

The development of Listening and Speaking skills

Parallel to work on thematic issues under culture and society, there will be specific study of audio and video materials with a view to furtherdeveloping the students’ comprehension skills and their ability to express their opinions in the target language.
