German Language, Culture and Society 4b

The purpose of this module is to give students an in-depth understanding of contemporary Germany through the study of recent trends in film, literature, music and other aesthetic forms. The module also aims to further develop the students’ reading and writing skills, with particular emphasis on structure and vocabulary. Finally, it will give the students opportunities to practice and further develop their oral skills through interaction with text and media.

Culture and Society: Contemporary Germany

Women and film; multicultural literature and film; recent architectural developments; contemporary Berlin in film, literature and visual art; historical events as represented in recent German films; the contemporary music scene in Germany.

The development of Reading and Writing skills / Project Work

Through the study of thematic issues under culture and society, students will have an opportunity to further develop their reading skills in German. There will also be specific work carried out to develop the students writing ability in German. Students will focus on writing summaries and presenting information and arguments more accurately in German.

The development of Listening and Speaking skills

Parallel to work on thematic issues under culture and society, there will be specific study of audio and video materials with a view to further developing the students’ comprehension skills and their ability to express their opinions in the target language.
