Spanish Language, Culture and Society 4b

The purpose of this module is to give students an understanding of thematic issues in contemporary Spain. The module will identify issues in society through the study of a piece of literature, films and the media. The module also aims to further develop the students’ reading and writing skills, with particular emphasis onstructure and vocabulary. Finally, it will give the students opportunities to practice and further develop their oral skills through interaction with text and media.

Culture & Society: Contemporary Spain

This topic will include an analysis of the changing face of Spain, post-Franco. Issues such as the transition to democracy, youth culture, terrorism, drugs, the new role of women and the arts will be examined.

The development of Reading and Writing skills

Through the study of thematic issues under culture and society, students will have an opportunity to further develop their reading skills in Spanish. There will also be specific work carried out to further develop the students' writing ability in Spanish. Students will focus on writing summaries and presenting information and arguments more accurately in Spanish.

The development of Listening and Speaking skills

Parallel to work on thematic issues under culture and society, there will be specific study of audio and video materials with a view to further developing the students’ comprehension skills and their ability to express their opinions in the target language.
