Module Overview

Logistics and Supply Chain Fundamentals

This module introduces learners to key areas of logistics and supply chain management, their role within organisations, their interactions, and interconnectivity. It also highlights their importance for the creation of competitive advantage. Learners will explore critical aspects of contemporary supply chain management such as collaboration, integration, visibility, agility, resilience, sustainability, corporate social responsibility and ethics. Learners will also engage with emerging trends and technologies in logistics and supply chain management and will critically evaluate their impact on the role and responsibilities of logistics and supply chain actors and their potential to help organisations reduce their carbon footprint. The module also inducts learners on to the expectations of Irish higher education and the MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management. This is achieved by synthesising challenges and issues from a broader perspective considering the importance of technological developments and the need for sustainability in logistics and supply chain management. The module facilitates reflection of learnings so that learners can fully take advantage of subsequent modules and other learning opportunities and presents detailed and practical insights that will help future logistics and supply chain leaders to capitalise on market opportunities, overcome challenges and make better informed sustainability led business decisions. The module also develops the academic writing and presentations skills of students through a set of group presentations, formative feedback on defined tasks and continuous assessment.
