Manufacturing & Robotics

The module provides the student with a knowledge of different types of modern manufacturing facilities, product and process types, associated plant layouts, automated inspection systems, materials handling and shop floor control technology.

Production systems

Batch, Job shop, Mass, Group technology layout, parts classification and coding, production flow analyses, FMS, machine cell design,

Automated Materials handling

Types of automated materials handling Quantitative analyses of material handling. Conveyor systems, Automated guided vehicles.

Automated storage systems

Storage system performance, automated storage /retrieval systems, carousel systems, Work in progress storage, Interfacing handling and storage.

Shop floor control.

Factory data collection and identification methods. Radio frequency, bar code systems, bar code standards. Data acquisition from plant sensors and devices using labview software. Job tracking.

RP and modelling techniques

Product design and prototyping using various R.P technologies, computer representation of complex 3d shapes.

Robot simulation & Programming

Introduction to ABB robot training cells. Hands on programming using the teach pendant, tool calibration, table/base calibration, programming 3d paths, pick and place and palletising exercises.

RoboDK simulations

Robot cell modelling and simulation for Mig welding, Spray painting, Glue dispensing.

Solidworks/RoboDK plugin. Importing CAD models to cell simulations, generation of robot path geometry in solidworks, transferring data to RoboDK and postprocessing for ABB robots.

Integration of Solidworks CAM

Automated inspection systems

Coordinate measuring machine (CMM), Scanning laser systems, Vision systems. Other non-contact inspection methods. Non destructive test methods

Laboratory activities

Intermediate level robot programming activities

Lab exercises to focus on hands on programming using the teach pendant and robot simulations using RoboDK simulation software. Modelling and simulation of robot cells for the following applications,

1.Mig welding robot,

2. Spray painting.

3. Glue dispensing,

4. Robot machining simulations using soldworks CAM plugin with RoboDk.
