This module builds upon the knowledge gained from the study of mathematics in year two of the course. In addition, the student will be introduced to computer software packages (e.g Maple) as well as developing mathematical expertise in engineering applications for this course. The aim of the mathematics modules on this course is to give students competence in standard techniques to enable them perform relevant engineering applications.
Linear algebra
Review of matrices. Systems of linear equations, Gaussian elimination, Cramer’s rule. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
Vectors
Vector theory and applications in solving engineering problems
Calculus
Functions of several variables, partial differentiation, stationary points
Laplace transforms
Definitions and properties. Inverse transforms. Applications to second order ordinary differential equations,
Mathematical software
Introduction to problem solving using appropriate mathematical software tools, e.g. Maple .
This module will be taught by lectures and accompanied by tutorial and laboratory classes.
