The aim of this subject is to allow the student to solve static problems with combined loading on components, and to be capable of optimising the design of such components. Also the module will analyse vibrations and their role in mechanical systems. The emphasis is on designing solutions applied to real world vibration problems.
Static Stress Analysis
Combined tensile, bending and torsion analysis. Calculation of saftety factors and optimisation of designs.
Free Vibration - Transient Response
Free damped systems. Transient solution for viscousdamping.
Forced Vibration in one degree of Freedom:
Steady state response to a harmonic force amplitude and phase angle.response curves. linear and rotational systems. time and frequencyresponses.
Transmission and isolation of Vibration:
Concept of transmissibility. derivation of appropriate equations. sketchingof typical response curves.
Vibration Measurement:
Application of instrumentation, including accelerometers & displacement transducers, & signal analysis.
Vibration absorbers
Tuned vibration absorbers, active absorbers, types and selection
